== History ==
In Roman times, the Ancient city was called Cova and belonged to the Roman province of Mauretania Sitifensis.

It was important enough to become a suffragan bishopric. Bishop Maximus of Cova was one of the Catholic bishops whom the Arian Vandal king Huneric summoned to Carthage in 484 and then exiled.〔Stefano Antonio Morcelli, (''Africa christiana'' ), Volume I, Brescia 1816, p. 145〕〔J. Ferron, v. ''Coviensis'' in (''Dictionnaire d'Histoire et de Géographie ecclésiastiques'' ), vol. XIII, Parigi 1956, col. 1002〕〔H. Jaubert, (''Anciens évêchés et ruines chrétiennes de la Numidie et de la Sitifienne'' ), in ''Recueil des Notices et Mémoires de la Société archéologique de Constantine'', vol. 46, 1913, pp. 115-116〕
